For over 20 years, John Clark combined his personal passion for all things speed-related with a professional career. Starting with casual photographs of APBA powerboat racing, Clark refocused his efforts on automobile racing. Clark covered a variety of racing series including NASCAR, CART, IRL, SCORE off-road truck racing, the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, and NHRA drag racing, with many of his images published in national and regional racing and automotive magazines.

Scope and Content Note

The John Clark racing photographs consist of 35mm color slides, photographic prints, and negatives covering an array of races including motocross motorcycles, off-road trucks, Indy cars, and various levels of stock car racing including Busch Grand National series, Craftsman Truck series, and Winston Cup series. Most of the races took place in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, and Nevada with additional races held in North Carolina and Pennsylvania.

Summary

NASCAR launched its nationwide truck series in 1995. Instead of automobiles, drivers competed in racing vehicles based on production pickups. Craftsman, the popular brand of tools established by Sears, was the title sponsor from 1995 through 2008. Many young drivers got their start in the truck series before moving up to NASCAR's top-level Cup Series.
