Summary

Between 1916 and 1924, naturalist John Burroughs, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone embarked on a series of camping trips. They called themselves the Vagabonds. In 1918, the group met in Pittsburgh to begin their trip through the southern Appalachian Mountains. They were joined by Edward Hurley, Commissioner of the U.S. Shipping Board (far left), and Professor R. J. H. DeLoach (far right).
