Calash Bonnet, 1830-1839

Summary

Collapsible calash bonnets returned to fashion in the 1820s and 1830s. They had been popular during the late 1700s in a balloon-shaped form to protect elaborate hair styles from being crushed. In the 1830s they followed current fashion, a small crown at the back of the head and an open brim. The ruffle at the back, called a bavolet, shaded the neck.
