Pung Sleigh, 1790-1830

Summary

Given the poor condition of roads and the high cost of wheeled vehicles, travel in the 18th and early 19th centuries could be easier in winter. Ice and snow smoothed travel routes, and less expensive sleighs and sleds provided reliable horse-drawn transportation. In New England, a simple box-shaped sleigh like this one was referred to as a "pung."
