Summary

Valdemar Poulsen, a Danish engineer, is depicted here standing with his "Poulsen Arc Transmitter," invented in 1903. Before vacuum tube technology was adopted in the 1920s, Poulsen's device was used to convert electricity to radio frequencies, allowing for the transmission of sound. Poulsen is also credited as the inventor of magnetic sound recording, creating the telegraphone between 1898-1900.
