Ford L-Head V-8 Automobile Engine, circa 1934

Summary

Ford's flathead V-8 engine made horsepower affordable. Casting the crankcase and cylinder banks as a single unit kept manufacturing costs low. In turn, Ford could sell finished V-8 cars at prices starting under $500. While cast-iron cylinder heads were standard when the engine was introduced in 1932, Ford switched to lighter-weight aluminum heads for 1933.
