Crazy Quilt by Susan McCord, 1880-1900

Summary

This Victorian-era "crazy" quilt looks very modern. The lines are predominately straight. The colors and textures of the scrap dress velvets, and dress or millinery ribbons, are deep and rich. This dramatic quilt was made by Indiana farmwife Susan McCord, whose everyday life was filled with household and farm chores. Her "scraps" of leisure time were filled with extraordinary quiltmaking.
