Gustave Dore (1832-1883) illustrated works by famous authors such as Milton, Dante, and Cervantes. In the early 1880s, the French artist created 26 drawings depicting the mind of the tortured narrator in Edgar Allan Poe's classic poem "The Raven." Dore died in 1883 soon after finishing the illustrations--the book was published posthumously in 1884.
