Janet Guthrie with Lola/Cosworth Race Car at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, 1979

Summary

Janet Guthrie, the first woman to compete in the Indianapolis 500, raced there for her third and final time in 1979. She drove a Lola chassis powered by a Cosworth DFX engine. Guthrie qualified at 185.720 mph, but a burned piston caused her to finish in 34th position. (There were 35 cars, rather than the usual 33, in that year's race.)
