Race Car Starter Motor, circa 1970

Summary

To save weight, Indianapolis race cars are not equipped with on-board starters. Instead, they're started with external electric motors that are powered by batteries carried on a small cart. A shaft on the electric motor is temporarily connected to the crankshaft in the engine. The motor spins the engine, the engine fires, and the external starter is disconnected.
