The twenty-seventh Indianapolis 500 was held on May 30, 1939. It produced the second of three Indy wins for Wilbur Shaw, who would later serve as president of Indianapolis Motor Speedway. George Bailey drove the first rear-engine car to compete in the 500. The race was marred by the death of 1938 winner Floyd Roberts in an accident on lap 109.
