Al Unser, Jr., is the son and nephew of Indy 500 champions, Al, Sr., and Bobby Unser. Like other members of the Unser family, Al Unser, Jr., began racing at a young age. By the age of eleven, he was already racing sprint cars. Al, Jr., made his debut on the CART circuit in 1982 and became one of its rising stars. He began competing in the IROC championship in 1986. At the age of 24, he was the youngest IROC champion ever. Unser won his first Indianapolis 500 race in 1992 (his father came in third in that race). His second win was in 1994. Al Unser, Jr., was named ABC's Wide World of Sports Athlete of the Year in 1994. The next year, he failed to qualify at Indianapolis.
