Exterior of Firestone Barn at its Original Site, Columbiana County, Ohio, 1878-1927

Summary

In the 1820s, Peter Firestone -- grandfather of tire magnate Harvey Firestone -- began constructing a new farmstead in Columbiana County, Ohio. The outbuildings included a large Pennsylvania-German bank barn, an American barn type with Swiss origins. This design allowed wagons to be driven into the barn's upper floor. In the 1980s, the Firestone barn was disassembled and reconstructed in Greenfield Village.
