The Ligue International des Aviateurs (the International League of Aviators) awarded annual trophies to outstanding aviators and aeronauts beginning in 1926. Each year, the League solicited opinions from well-known individuals with ties to aviation, such as Edsel Ford, to help select trophy recipients.
